ESIC & WIPO Launch IGET: Dispute Resolution in Esports & Gamming

In a move that’s set to reshape the esports and gaming landscape, the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) and the World Intellectual Property Organization Arbitration and Mediation Center (WIPO AMC) have unveiled the International Games and Esports Tribunal (IGET). This groundbreaking, not-for-profit body aims to provide tailored, professional, and accessible Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) services, addressing the unique challenges of the global video games and esports industries.

Traditional legal systems often struggle to keep pace with the rapid evolution and intricate nuances of gaming and esports. Disputes in these sectors aren’t just about contracts or regulations—they’re about a dynamic ecosystem where technology, creativity, and competition intersect on a global stage. IGET steps in to fill this critical gap with a fresh approach:

  • Specialized Expertise: Bringing together arbitrators and mediators who deeply understand esports, video games, and intellectual property law ensures that disputes are resolved by professionals who genuinely grasp the industry’s complexities.
  • Global Accessibility: With an international framework, IGET enables parties worldwide to resolve disputes efficiently, transcending jurisdictional barriers that often hinder swift resolutions.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: From anti-doping violations and player disciplinary matters to intellectual property conflicts and contractual disagreements, IGET addresses a wide spectrum of disputes, promoting integrity and fairness across the board.
  • Efficient Procedures: Designed for the fast-paced nature of esports and gaming, IGET’s bespoke ADR processes aim for swift, effective resolutions, minimizing disruptions in an industry where every moment counts.

This collaboration between ESIC and WIPO AMC isn’t just about resolving disputes—it’s about setting a new standard for how conflicts are managed in an industry that’s constantly pushing boundaries. By sharing expertise and focusing on joint initiatives like training specialized neutral dispute resolution experts, they’re paving the way for more robust and efficient governance in esports and gaming.

With ESIC transitioning its Independent Appeals Panel functions to IGET, the tribunal becomes the exclusive jurisdiction for all ESIC appeals. This move consolidates efforts to uphold integrity and ensures that stakeholders have a clear, authoritative avenue for dispute resolution.
